چکیده

The grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) of a fully-orthorhombic (O) Ti–25Al–24Nb (at.%) microstructure was investigated using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The fine-grained (GS=17 lm) equiaxed microstructure was processed by hot forging and hot-rolling operations performed below the body-centered cubic (bcc) phase transus temperature followed by heat treatment in the O-phase field at 875 C. Nearly all the O/O grain boundaries were greater than 15 degrees misoriented and such boundaries exhibited the highest frequencies at misorientations of approximately 65 ( 26% of all grain boundaries) and 90 ( 10% of all grain boundaries). Twin-related O-phase variant interfacial (110) planes were identified and such boundaries represented 39% of all the O/O grain boundaries with 65 misorientation about [001]. 2004 Acta Materialia Inc. The Grain Boundary Character Distribution of the Orthorhombic Phase in Ti2AlNb Intermetallic Alloys

The grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) of the orthorhombic (O) phase in near Ti2AlNb intermetallic alloys was investigated. The alloys were prepared by either induction heating above the body centered cubic (BCC) transus or by subtransus processing through pancake forging and hot-packed rolling. Using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), the twin-related O-phase variant interfacia...

Grain Boundary Character Dependence on Nucleation of Discontinuous Precipitates in Cu-Ti Alloys

The dependence of the grain boundary character distribution for a Cu-4 at. % Ti polycrystal alloy (average grain size: 100 µm) on the nucleation of cellular discontinuous precipitates was systematically investigated. In an alloy over-aged at 723 K, cellular discontinuous precipitates consisted of a terminal Cu solid solution and a stable β-Cu₄Ti lamellae nucleated at grain boundaries. Electron ...

Texture investigation of the superelastic Ti-24Nb-4Zr-8Sn alloy

In this work, the influence of crystallographic texture on mechanical properties was investigated by X-ray diffraction in the superelastic Ti-24Nb-4Zr-8Sn alloy. Different textures were obtained by changing the cold rolling reduction rate and the following thermal treatment (solution treatment or flash thermal treatment). The tensile tests performed show that Young’s modulus, elongation at rupt...

Microstructure and mechanical behavior of superelastic Ti-24Nb-0.5O and Ti-24Nb-0.5N biomedical alloys.

In this study, the microstructure and the mechanical properties of two new biocompatible superelastic alloys, Ti-24Nb-0.5O and Ti-24Nb-0.5N (at.%), were investigated. Special attention was focused on the role of O and N addition on α(″) formation, supereleastic recovery and mechanical strength by comparison with the Ti-24Nb and Ti-26Nb (at.%) alloy compositions taken as references. Microstructu...

Transformation of BCC and B2 High Temperature Phases to HCP and Orthorhombic Structures in the Ti-Al-Nb System. Part II: Experimental TEM Study of Microstructures

Possible transformation paths that involve no long range diffusion and their corresponding microstructural details were predicted by Bendersky, Roytburd, and Boettinger [J. Res. Natl. Inst. Stand. Technol. 98, 561 (1993)] for Ti-Al-Nb alloys cooled from the high temperature BCC/B2 phase field into close-packed orthorhombic or hexagonal phase fields. These predictions were based on structural an...
